15th September 2012: Fernhurst Scout Group

I was invited to give a flintknapping demonstration by the Fernhurst Scout Group at the Fernhurst Furnace and Iron works (Sussex). I did some flintknapping and talked about the various tools and artefacts that I had taken to the many Beavers, Cubs and Scouts that had attended this event. After my demonstrations, I enjoyed their hospitality at the barbeque.

During the Industrial Revolution of the 17th and 18th Centuries, the iron industry grew at this site using local ore, charcoal and water power and the remains of Fernhurst Furnace are some of the best preserved in the Sussex Weald. The furnace site was first recorded and excavated by Chichester and District Archaeology unit in 1989 and subsequently has been scheduled by English Heritage to be of national importance (Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979).
