Pressure flaking & Prehistoric arrow workshop
Flintknapping was used to produce a wide variety of tools over thousands of years, but arguably arrowheads are the most iconic. From the Neolithic into the Bronze Age, arrowheads were made via pressure flaking, a tricky technique that requires practice to learn. It was used to make some of the stunningly thin leaf arrowheads of the early Neolithic and distinctive barbed and tanged arrowheads often found in Beaker burials.
On this workshop, we will explore the origins of archery, bows and arrowheads before starting to get to grips with pressure flaking. It is strongly recommended that potential students for this workshop have some experience in flintknapping and are looking to expand their skills into making arrowheads. We’ll look at the tools used in pressure flaking before starting to understand the correct technique. These are important stages to understand to improve flaking and avoid injury.…
